Make the Most of Your 10 Minutes

  • A doctors consultation is 10 minutes long
  • Always think carefully about what you want to say
  • Be clear about your expectations from the consultation - for example, do you want advice, guidance, medication or just reassurance?
  • Be ready to explain your symptoms fully
  • Don’t be afraid to ask questions and be sure you fully understand the answers the doctor gives
  • List ALL your concerns; bring up your most worrying concern first. Your doctor will be happy to prioritise these with you
  • Be aware the doctor may not be able to deal with all your concerns in the one appointment and may arrange with you a further appointment if required
  • Please note patients arriving more than ten minutes late for an appointment may be asked to re-book.  Patients who fail to attend will be warned and may be asked to register with a different surgery
